Description
Makwa is Bear in anishinaabemowin.
At the heart of this balm is pure bear grease, a traditional medicine that has been valued by our people for generations. When many of us think of bear grease, we think of the old ways it has been used: for tired, overworked bodies & traditionally reached for when the muscles and joints were aching.
Makwa is wise and carries many teachings. Teachings of strength, protection and healing.
Bear is known for having an important relationship with the plant relatives. Makwa seeks out roots, berries, leaves and other plants from the land throughout its life. Within our teachings, this relationship reminds us that Makwa knows the way of the plants. Carrying a lifetime of relationship with the land and its medicines.
That relationship between Makwa and the plants is what I wanted to honour in this balm. This bear grease balm is infused with four plant medicines:
- Yarrow
- Nettle
- St. John’s Wort
- White Willow Leaf
This blend combines herbs traditionally associated with bruised and hardworking tissues, joint tenderness, physical discomfort, and potential for supporting healing of damaged nerves (Hello, St John's Wort)
Bear grease makes a beautiful carrier for these plants, bringing animal medicine and plant medicine together in one preparation.
Once the infusion is complete, I blend it with beeswax and Vitamin E and finish it with Black Spruce, Rosemary & Peppermint essential oils, giving the balm its earthy, cooling forest aroma and making it especially soothing for massage.
